On solaris, for beepage and a lot of other things, config files are stored in /usr/local/etc. I'm assuming, at least in my experience, that for Linux we put them in /etc. Since this is mostly things I have learned from others, what is the general agreement on where config files should go on Linux?

Should we still use /usr/local/etc for things such as beepage, or should it be /etc?
